A singer struggling with a past eating disorder – Rolling Stone

It took 10 years (and a triggering experience) for Tove Lo to feel ready to sing about an issue that affected her deeply: her previous struggle with an eating disorder. Before the release of his LP dirty wife this Friday, the Swedish pop star released “Grapefruit” and its accompanying video, which captures the feeling of being trapped she faced in her youth.

“I finally came to love my body. When I went on stage, I wore little clothes and flashed. For me, it was like a victory every time I felt good about myself,” he said. she said in a statement. “I made this movie in Sweden, and they asked me to lose eight pounds in two weeks. They put me on a strict diet, and it was fine. Out of nowhere, these memories popped up in my head.

She added, “I hadn’t thought about these experiences for so long. I was back where I never wanted to be again, but I needed to put it down on paper right away. I was ready for that.”

She said she had been hesitant to talk about her body image issues for a while, but suggested that perhaps the “two years of stillness” during the pandemic have rekindled those memories.

“I guess I had to find the right way to share the feelings and the vicious cycle of behavior I was stuck in. I was freed from my eating disorder and body issues for a very long time, but they took too much of my teenage years,” the singer said. “Maybe I needed all that free time so I could look back without feeling pain.”

The video directed by Lisette Donkersloot – which follows her in clips ‘counting the calories’ in her kitchen and flashes with metaphorical images of the musician feeling trapped inside ‘the skin room’ – sums up how she felt the need “to crawl out of my own skin” into “a body I hated”.

Donkersloot said she was inspired by Tove Lo’s vivid description of the emotions she shared when talking about coping with the eating disorder. “[I wanted to] literally crawling in his mind. This is how I created the inner chamber of self-destruction as I like to call it,” she said in a statement. “This room of skin – an enlarged, unrealistic reflection of her own body – in which ‘Inner Tove’ is controlled by her outer self where not only she, but the actual room is physically injured, bruised and scratched by the impacts of her movements , finally his thoughts.

“Grapefruit” follows previously released singles “2 Die 4”, “No One Dies From Love” and “True Romance”. She also recently announced her North American tour in support of dirty wife.

“I looked back at how my femininity has helped and hurt me throughout my life,” she said. rolling stone about the album. “And I think the album has that tone. I evoke all these questions, these feelings and these emotions which do not necessarily have answers. It’s just more my current place of wonder.
