ABBA and Sea Shanty Singer topped Germany’s end-of-year charts – Billboard

This year’s German pop charts are led by a Swedish band and a sailors singing singer.

ABBA Trip was the best-selling album of 2021 and Nathan Evans’ “Wellerman” was the most popular single, according to GfK Entertainment, which tracks music sales and streaming in the German market. (The company’s charts count downloads and physical sales streams – as well as streaming for singles – and weight them. The annual charts count sales from the 50th week of 2020 through the 49th week of 2021.)

the list of the ten best albums also includes two tracks by german schlager singer Helene Fischer (her new album, Rausch, at no.2, plus and a compilation at no.8), as well as AC / DC (no.3, with Power Up), Iron Maiden (n ° 6, with Senjutsu), and Adele (n ° 7, after only a few weeks of sales for her new 30).

the singles chart includes Ed Sheeran (“Bad Habits”, n ° 2), Tiësto (“The Business”, n ° 3), The Weeknd (“Save Your Tears” at n ° 5 and “Blinding Lights” at n ° 9), The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber (“Stay”, n ° 6) and Olivia Rodrigo (“Bon 4 U”, n ° 10).

ABBA Trip was particularly impressive, according to related data from GfK, given that it had first week sales of 235,000 and total sales of 400,000 in a country of about 83 million people, or about a quarter of the American population. 33,000 of those sales were vinyl records. By comparing, Trip sold 30,000 copies on vinyl in the United States, according to MRC Data.

The charts are good news for Universal Music Group, which includes ABBA, Fischer and Evans among others. Overall, the company had five of the top ten albums and six of the top ten singles.
