Above & Beyond partners with Amazon Music to share playlist of remixed songs in spatial audio – EDM.com

Immersive and spatial audio is fast becoming the next step in audio.

The Trance Above & Beyond group have now partnered with Amazon Music to share remixes in the Dolby Atmos spatial audio format. Reworked tracks include “Almost Home”, “Screwdriver” and “1995” by gardenstate.

As you listen to the album, notice how various synths and percussion instruments are placed in the mix. The percussions seem bigger, the synths have more room to move among the melodies, and the temporal effects (like delay and reverb) fill the space much more fluidly, giving the tracks a whole new feel.

Spatial audio is a new form of technology that delivers surround sound experience to everyday users without the need for expensive hardware. Apple announced the technology’s implementation within its AirPods and Beats lineup earlier this summer, and Apple Music subscribers are receiving the feature at no additional cost.

According to PC Mag, “Instead of just mixing audio over 5.1 or 7.1 channels (the x.1 is the subwoofer, which is not directional), it maps individual audio sources to different positions in 3D space around you. It is intended to provide a much more immersive spatial feel for your home theater, similar to what you get in a theater or live space.

Above & Beyond recently released their 10-year album Group therapy just last week. It featured remixes of music from Oliver Heldens’ band, Manila Killa, Kasablanca, and more. The release also comes with a vinyl box set comprising six records in total, a slipmat and prints.
