Post hardcore band Dance Gavin Dance announce that vocalist Tilian Pearson has left the band. The news follows recent allegations of sexual assault.
A Reddit user posted a long writing of his brief relationship with Pearson. The two were having sex under the influence of alcohol, when Pearson suddenly slapped her. The Reddit user asked Pearson not to do it again, but Pearson continued to slap her despite her warnings. They later saw each other again at an AirBNB apartment, where Pearson allegedly repeatedly acted against her consent, preventing the Reddit user from leaving.
At press time, Pearson had commented on the incident as follows:
“This morning I was made aware of someone’s allegations of a brief relationship surrounding the Swanfest weekend. Admittedly, it was a period when I was very vulnerable, but I can assure you that any sexual act was purely consensual. Since then, she has contacted me several times to see me again. We met again later in Cleveland on tour, and I decided to end things the next day. It was an amicable separation, so this story is extremely surprising.
“I’ve saved text threads that paint a picture of the nature of our brief relationship, but I’d rather not have to put it out there.
“It pains me a bit because I thought there was an overall lightness and softness that wasn’t mentioned in his version.
“I take the subject of sexual assault seriously and want to strongly reiterate that there has never been a time when anything has happened that was not consensual. I understand that in a new sexual relationship there is a period to determine each other’s preferences, but there is no doubt that our physical contact has already crossed boundaries into something akin to aggression.
“My overall mood surrounding the weekend was filled with grief and I relied on alcohol as a crutch to get through it. After Swanfest, I did the sober tour to properly grieve and j got a lot of support from the band and friends.
“Although his story saddens me to read, I will hold no grudge against him. I hope that clarifies things and thank you for listening to me.
The band has now posted an announcement on social media that Pearson has left the band.
“The recent allegations against Tilian are something we take very seriously, and we have had a thorough discussion regarding the appropriate action.
“Effective immediately, Tilian will withdraw from the group in order to seek professional help.
“Jon, Will, Matt and Andrew will continue with all currently scheduled dates. The band will also proceed with the release of Jackpot Juicer as planned.
“We’ve all worked incredibly hard on this album, and it’s also Tim’s last recorded work. [Feerick, the band’s bassist who died earlier this year] – we want to be sure to give him all the attention he deserves to honor his legacy.
“We know this is a very trying and upsetting situation for everyone involved, and we’re asking people to be as understanding as possible as everyone works through this.”
