Kelly Clarkson Covers Cardigans’ ‘Lovefool’: Watch – Billboard

Kelly Clarkson gets us in the mood for Valentine’s Day with her performance of “Lovefool” by The Cardigans on Tuesday (February 9).

Pulsating purple lights illuminate Clarkson for the loving blanket. “Love me, love me / Say you love me / Cheat on me, cheat on me / Go on and cheat on me / Love me, love me / Pretend to love me / Leave me, leave “Me / Just say you need me,” Clarkson and his backing vocals hum.

“Lovefool” is the first single that Peter Svensson and Nina Persson wrote for the third studio album by their Swedish alt pop group, First band on the moon, in 1996. The song spent seven weeks at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Mainstream Top 40 Airplay chart, starting with the count dated February 22, 1997. Justin Bieber popularly sampled the chorus of his song “Love Me” from his 2009 EP My world, which reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. (The original song was not ranked in the Hot 100 because at the time, non-commercially available songs – like “Lovefool” – weren’t eligible to be on the list.)

Persson spoke to Billboard in 2016 for the 20th anniversary of the song about how its placement in Baz Luhrmann’s romantic tragedy film in 1996 Romeo + Juliet paved the way for the song’s success in the United States

“We certainly knew it was a single and a catchy song when we wrote it, but the direction it took is not something we could have predicted,” he said. she said at the time. “It wasn’t necessarily our character; it was a bit of a monster on the record – which, objectively, still is.
