Lorde covers Britney Spears’ “Break the Ice”: watch


Think of Lorde as a Britney Spears fan. The interpreter of “Solar Power” is Voguefeatured on the October cover of, and gave the magazine an exclusive performance, which they then posted on their YouTube page on Wednesday, September 8. Surprisingly, Lorde’s performance included a single cover of Spears’ 2007 single “Break the Ice”. Blackout.

In the video, Lorde stands on a boulder entirely surrounded by trees in the lush New York Botanical Gardens in a red long-sleeved cropped top, matching leggings and red patent-leather heels. A boom box accompanies him, playing the instrumental of “Break the Ice”. The singer trades the song’s original electro-R&B instrumental for something much more stripped down and enigmatic to let her voice shine. After singing the first verse and the chorus, Lorde takes off her heels and switches to dream instrumentals for her. Solar energy track “Fallen Fruit.”

“Break the Ice” was a moderate success for Spears. After making the song her third and final single from her fifth studio album, Blackout, “Break the Ice” peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 48 in May 2008, and spent a total of 17 weeks on the chart. Blackout, by extension, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and spent a total of 34 weeks on the chart.
