Tigran Hamasyan – “Levitation 21”

I’m really excited for those who haven’t heard from Tigran yet. Every time I listen to his music, I always notice something new. His most recent album The inner call is honestly a masterpiece, and the track that really blew me away is the intimidating opening of 21/16 which is packed with “wow” moments. His ability to build odd or oddly grouped counter structures within music while always finding new ways to bring the main theme back into the picture is something that is very impressive to me and I spend a lot of time. trying to find ways to do that in our music. You are going to be in for a treat if you’ve never heard this before. [-Mitch]

My epic – “From the wilderness”

Our new album is about 24 hours in 2019, when I tried to kill myself while we were touring Europe. After being apprehended by police in Belgium and taken to a mental hospital for evaluation, I returned to the United States feeling like a confused and shattered shell of myself. On the way home I came across this song and listened to it on repeat. The song is about a phenomenon that many can resonate with – getting lost to be found. He speaks of the archetypal “wilderness” process of seeking answers and questioning pre-existing ideas. The lyrics “I think we are all lost until we walk in the desert” sums up so much what I was struggling with at the time, and what I was hoping to convey with our new album. [-Garrett]

Arca – “Fugaces”

This whole album is amazing and to this day it is probably still the most indefinable music I have ever heard. This particular track is one of my favorites, full of surreal sound design and weird (but beautiful) vocals. Listening to this album is more like traveling through an art installation than listening to “songs”. Since I discovered Arca through her production work on Bjork’s Utopia, I immediately hooked. The attention to detail in terms of mix and sound is amazing. Some of the more otherworldly sounds and textures in his music had a huge influence on my approach to certain segments of the album. Hate – “Aggressive Evolution”

Mitch introduced me to this band a few years ago. As a band, we enjoyed how Loathe pushes the boundaries of heavy music, somehow seamlessly shifting between hardcore, metal, atmospheric rock and even (maybe) reggaeton. The title of the song is so fitting, as the song eschews genre conventions and rejects normal tropes to do something that feels truly inspired. Most of the time, our band has found most of our inspiration outside of the “metalcore” umbrella with which we are most often associated. With Loathe, we see how they channeled some of our similar influences with approaches we had not yet considered. [-Garrett]

Death Cab for Cutie – “Title and recording”

Transatlanticism has always been my favorite album – since I was 15. But this song took on new meaning for me when I learned to play it on guitar in preparation for our video shoot of “Terminal” – which is the first Silent Planet song for me to play on guitar. I’m still a long way from being a competent guitarist, but my band mates have encouraged me to expand my contributions to the band and have helped me avoid the typical pitfalls of a novice musician. I’m sure they are fed up with hearing me play this song every day, but they have only been kind and positive to me throughout my journey. [-Garrett]

me without you – “The Soviet”

Aaron Weiss’ musical storytelling has always been second to none, in my opinion. His use of imagery to convey deeper emotional experiences inspired me for this particular album, as it was our first record which I wrote mostly from my own perspective. Whenever I felt uninspired or found myself searching for the fruit within reach, I would run and listen. Catch foxes for us and feel brought back to a mystical reality where even the most modest objects, situations and creatures are full of meaning. This song changed my life forever when I was 18, and she still does at 31. [-Garrett]

Scarypoolparty – “Black Cross”

Another song that feels more like a journey than any clearly structured track. Think of a beautiful orchestral moment in a Miyazaki movie that quickly turns into an electronic Matrix-style Gothic rave. It straddles the line of “complex enough-for-a-music nerd” and “never-over-the-top”, two things that can be difficult to skillfully navigate (there’s some wild piano stuff in them. verses.) The entire album is gold, but the energy and mysterious personality of this song particularly influenced us while we were writing and recording Iridescent. As of this writing, we have made friends with Alejandro and are continually blown away by everything he posts. A true talent in a million. [-Mitch]

Paramore – “Swimming pool”

As we were writing this album, I discovered a serious love for the lyricism of Hayley Williams – especially in After the laugh and recent solo work. Aaron Weiss’ influence on Hayley’s writing is obvious – and I love that he has a function on the record. It might seem like a superficial reason to love the song (bad pun), but the start of this track feels like a pool to me – if that makes sense – and the flow of the song, coupled with production elements. keys, all supported (I’m sorry) the experience. This song is about the risk of love and second chances – and our record Iridescent is, in many ways, pretty much the same thing. [-Garrett]

Anderson .Paak – “Get off”

There is a point in every album where I have the writer’s block. Several, if I’m completely honest. I found myself in a creative rut when someone showed me Tiny Desk’s performance for this song… and the joy of that performance kind of unlocked something in me. (I could also say the same for the Blood Orange Tiny Desk!) I still find myself turning to other pieces of him when I’m looking for a hopeful spark. [-Garrett]

Down system – “Needles”

Every day, as we left the studio in North Hollywood, we blew up DICO and dodged traffic to my little apartment in Pasadena. Honestly, I could have chosen several songs from Toxicity – because we would explode this record and we would scramble. It became our sort of post-studio palette cleaning ritual, probably because this record has been etched into all of our brains since we were 12 or something. And this drive will always take me back to northern LA, and vice versa. There is actually a song on our record “Alive, As a Housefire” that received a strong influence from SOAD in terms of vocal delivery … especially at the end.
