Pakistani politician and singer Abrar Ul Haq has brought charges against producer and filmmaker Karan Johar and his production house Dharma Productions for stealing his song ‘Nach Punjaban’ from the upcoming movie ‘Jugjugg Jeeyo’.

On May 22, Abrar tweeted, “I haven’t sold my song ‘Nach Punjaban’ to any Indian film, and I reserve the right to go to court to claim damages. Producers like @karanjohar shouldn’t not use copied songs. This is my 6th song to be copied, which will not be allowed at all.”

However, he did not specify whether he was referring specifically to Karan Johar or to Bollywood in general.

Abrar’s Tweet from May 23 reads, “The song ‘Nach Punjaban’ has not been licensed to anyone. If anyone claims it, then produce the deal. I will take legal action. # NachPunjaban”

The song “Nach Punjaban”, voiced by Abrar, was originally released in 2002.

Although written and performed by Abrar, “Nach Punjaban” is from Moviebox Birmingham Limited on Spotify. Following Abrar’s tweet, the UK record label’s Twitter account issued its own statement, weakening Abrar’s case.

He noted, “Nach Panjaban has been officially granted permission to include it in the T Series movie ‘Jugjugg Jeeyo’. Karan Johar and Dharma Movies have the legal right to use this song in their movie and Abrarul Haq’s tweet earlier today. is defamatory and totally unacceptable.”

Now, T-Series has released a statement addressing the matter on its social media handles. Snubbing Abrar’s claims, he assured: “We have legally acquired the rights to adapt the song Nach Punjaban from the album Nach Punjaban released on iTunes on January 1, 2002 and is also available on the Lollywood Classics YouTube channel, owned and operated by 1 Moviebox Records Label, for the movie Jug JuggJeeyo produced by Dharma Movies. All credits due must be included on all platforms when the song is released.

He argues that “as represented by 1 Moviebox Records Label, said song copyright belongs exclusively to Moviebox with all valid documentation.”

“Jugjugg Jeeyo” will hit theaters on June 24. It is directed by Raj Mehta and produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The film will star Anil Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor as parents of Varun Dhawan and Manish Paul, and Kiara Advani as Varun’s wife.
