Polyphia have come a long way as a band – from their early days as a more shred-oriented band to creating some seriously awesome guitar music that was good enough that Steve Vai we acknowledged. They’ve also come a long way from their super pissed off characters talking crazy shit about everyone and commenting on them being their own favorite band. What sucks now because even though Polyphia were kids when they made those comments, they didn’t quite go away.
In an interview with dragon strength guitarist Herman Li, Henson discussed how the group has grown since those early days and why they chose this avenue as a marketing tactic.
“In the beginning and even with the last record… The last record in particular – we were going to say anything and everything to get attention for the record. The first press release we did, we insulted [Ronnie Radke] and call [him] a dildo.
“It was like when Tyler the Creator before he was like a great artist tweeted at Chris Brown just talk shit to him, to the point where Chris Brown actually answered. And then it became a thing that people know who Tyler the Creator is now because he was talking shit to Chris Brown.
“And just taking inspiration from a lot of things that were happening in that era, like 2017-2018. It was like, just when Lil pump came out and just like a bunch of super ignorant… Just some kind of online idiot. And that was the shtick we were looking for.
“What you were saying – you say something, and then they [the public] cling to it forever. We are still dealing with the consequences of this, especially me. And so some of these dirty jobs that are being done right now.
“But, you know, I guess that’s to be expected. It’s also like a learning process and it will take about 10 years of press to get past it, I guess.”
