SKID RANK bass player Rachel Bolan says that the new leader of the group Erik Grönwall is “a really hard-working singer who takes care of his instrument”.
Greenwall recently joined SKID RANK in replacement of PZ Théartwho had been with the group for over six years.
SKID RANK played his first gig with Greenwall on March 26 at the Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada as a supporting act for the rescheduled dates for SCORPIO‘ “Sin City Nights” residence. SKID RANKThe nine-song set included her new single, “The Gang is All There”which was made available on March 25. The song is the title track from the band’s upcoming album, which will arrive on October 14 via earMUSIC.
SKID RANK checked in “The Gang is All There” in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Nick Raskulineczwho has worked with FOO FIGHTERS, ACID STONE, HALESTORM, EVANESCENCE, RUSH and CHAINED ALICEamong many others.
Rachel discussed Greenwalljoins the group in a new interview with Merger from Detroit WRIF radio station. Asked about the “stresses and challenges associated with the arrival of a new singer in the group”, Bolan say it is a challenge and you’re under a microscope for sure. This time was different, man; it’s just different. His ability and his… just his way of doing things and his work ethic is one I’ve never seen other than the four of us who are already in the band. He doesn’t stop until he gets it right. Whether it’s his version, what he thinks is right, or what we think is right, he works hard – he works hard. And you can see why he’s had the success he’s had overseas because he’s a really hard-working singer who takes care of his instrument and takes pride in his craft.”
Rachel also reflected on SKID RANKfirst concert of Greenwall, saying, “We all really wanted to have that first one under our belt, that first show as a whole. But we were just, like, ‘Okay, let’s do this, man.’ Because we had two days of rehearsal. We got together on a Wednesday and a Thursday, and then we took the day off so he could rest his voice. And on top of that, he’s nine hours jet lag. And and then we all got together and talked. And it was, like, ‘Okay, let’s try to get this rhythm of the show rhythm’ and this and that. And then the first hit down beat, we were on stage , and I just remember watching Snake [guitarist Dave Sabo] after Erik started to sing, I watch Snake and he was just smiling. We are badass; you’re not supposed to smile on stage… Honestly, man, as soon as he opens his mouth… His timing is impeccable. We knew it was going to be cool. And each show has gotten even better, as we learn each other’s rhythm on stage. When I left that show, I said to Erik, I go, ‘That was the first show. I can’t wait to show a hundred. It’s going to be amazing.'”
Bolan previously talked about how Erik came to join SKID RANK during an appearance in the last episode of SiriusXMit is “Trunk Nation LA Invasion”recorded a few hours before SKID RANKwith the Swedish singer. “We toured together. HEAT was on tour with SKID RANK. What year was it? ’18? And we would hear it every night from the locker room,” he said. “And a few times I was like, ‘Man, listen to this guy sing. He’s phenomenal. And then I forget who I am. ‘ said, someone who was with us, ‘Yeah, he won ‘Idol’ in Sweden.’ And I was, like, ‘Man, he’s got pipes.’ And I was listening. Then I went behind the dash a few times. And in my head, I’m like, ‘Wow! When SKID RANK has free time, I’m going to get in touch with this guy and start a side project with him. And apparently, that never happened. But over time and we got to the point where we were with pz and other things, Erik was our first…i said Snake, I go, ‘We have to check this guy.’ And with Snake and the rest of the guys, and Nick, our producer, Nick Raskulinecz, were, like, ‘That’s the guy, man. Send him songs. So we sent her songs that we were recording, just with a vocal guide on them, and they came back about 24 hours later, and we were like, ‘Okay. He’s the guy. Get him on a plane. Let’s do this.'”
He continued: “We recorded this record… We’ve never done it like this before. He recorded at his home in Sweden and sent it to pseudo and send it to Snake and me, and we just said, ‘Okay, change that part. Do this. Do this. And I just found out last night at dinner, he’s, like, ‘I’ve never recorded this before.’ [Laughs] And I was, like, ‘I’m so glad I didn’t know.’ As if my stress level wasn’t high enough. I would have just burned completely right there. But, yeah, man, and then actually Tuesday [March 22], when we all flew to Vegas for rehearsals, it was the first time we had met face to face – other than on tour; we saw each other several times in the hallway. But other than that, Tuesday was the first time, apart from a Zoom call, that we met face to face.”
Addressing the circumstances that led to SKID RANKis shared with Art, Sabo said: “It has come to a point where the situation with Zee kind of putting himself forward where we had to make a decision, because something still wasn’t working right. And that’s when the idea with Erik has come. And ironically enough, years ago, a good friend of mine, Rob Hoffman, said: ‘If anything ever happens, there’s this guy in Sweden.’ And he said the same thing to our manager years ago. And all of a sudden, as life went on, it came full circle and it became a reality.
“I’ve been on a high for probably the last month, just hearing the way the songs are coming out, seeing the enthusiasm in everyone, seeing the positive reactions we’re getting from playing them for people,” Snake added. “And it’s so amazing. I feel like I’m 25 again… But it’s been an amazing experience, and the way it all kind of came together, it just makes you say: ‘Dude, something is going on here, it’s out of our control. The stars have aligned, if you will.’
