Spotlight on: Irish singer Aimée

For this week’s Spotlight On report, we spoke with Irish singer Aimée.

The Dublin native has always dreamed of being a pop star, and she has released huge hits since appearing on the music scene in 2018 – including “Naked”, “Don’t Call Me Pretty” and her viral song in response to “bulletproof” trolls.

For her latest single ‘just a phase’, released on October 8, Aimée collaborated with Swedish songwriter Nick Jarl to create a catchy pop anthem inspired by the 90s / 00s.

The 25-year-old is also going on tour next year, performing in Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Cork.

In his exclusive interview with, Aimée spoke about staying inspired during the coronavirus pandemic, the highlight of her career to date, and using her platform to speak out on important issues.

Tell us about your new single ‘just a phase’. What is the inspiration behind the song?

In writing ‘just a phase’ I wanted to create something fun and playful with a little nod to my favorite musical era – Swedish pop from the 90s / 00s.

The song is about that feeling when you realize you are falling in love with someone. Even if you planned not to get attached. All you can do is hope that it will pass, that it is “just one phase”.

How has the past year been in terms of the creative process? Was it a help or an obstacle?

It was great for my writing because I had so much free time. But missing out on playing live and not being able to draw inspiration from normal everyday life was really hard. But on the other hand, it really forced me to dig deep. So personally, it was really fundamental and beneficial because it put a lot of things in perspective for me.

The last few months have been difficult for the arts sector. Can’t wait to play again? Do you have any live performances coming up?

Absolutely yes. I’m going on tour in February! So I’m so excited for this. My absolute favorite thing to do in the world is perform and meet people who listen to my music.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Play in the 3Arena. But I have a feeling that I will have a new highlight after next year.

You’ve already talked about the effects of online trolling and the dangers of anonymous online forums. What do you think needs to be done here in Ireland to end this problem?

I don’t think we are doing enough for that if I’m being honest. It’s still happening and I don’t see anything changing anytime soon. The introduction of Coco’s Law will change things I hope!

I will continue to remind people to be nice, think before you speak, and also use my platform to remind people to try not to let other people’s opinions affect you.

“The opinions of others about you are not your concern! “

What advice would you give to your young self?

People will be talking about you anyway. So you might as well do what makes you happy! Give them something to talk about.

What can we expect from you in the coming months? Do you have something exciting in the works?

Yes! Lots of exciting new features… all you have to do is wait and see!
