Swedish pop star Sofia Karlberg has released a brand new single, “Hate My Guts”, a brilliant song foreshadowing her upcoming EP.
Speaking of “Hate My Guts,” Sofia shares, “The fear of engagement and having trouble letting people in is something I’ve had issues with for as long as I can remember. wrote the song with two of my closest friends not only as an excuse for those I left out, but also as a reason to open up and let me in, which makes the song really special to me.
Following the EP’s first single, “Do It Again”, “Hate My Guts” features the same musical team: Sofia Karlberg, Victoria Ross and producer / songwriter Martin Bustgaard.
Sofia Karlberg broke through and gained wide popularity with reinterpretations of Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” and Chainsmokers’ “Paris”, which garnered massive views on YouTube. In 2019, she started releasing original songs, dropping her EP, Impeccable spirit, followed by a series of high-profile hit singles amassing over 1.5 billion streams.
“Hate My Guts” opens with solitary guitars with flavors of progressive rock topped by the luscious and tender tones of Sofia. A throbbing beat gives the song an alluring beat as plush pop leitmotifs roll overhead. Sofia’s fragrant voice evokes a sweet warmth, full of passion and regret, while radiant harmonies imbue the melody with dazzling depth and dimension.
“There’s only one heart that can take / I can feel it now that you’re not here / I know too well that I should just forgive myself / For screwing this up / But I still hate my guts. “
Both nuanced and remorseful, “Hate My Guts” reflects the grief, sorrow and gratitude of Sofia Karlberg.
