The best “Harry Potter” covers from around the world

June 26 marks the 25th anniversary of the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone publication date. It is estimated that over 200 different book covers were made for the Harry Potter series since that first post, so to honor this incredible milestone, we’ve decided to share some of our favorites.

The original American edition

Let’s start first with a classic that Mary GrandPré brought to us. The first edition of Harry Potter United States of America book covers are familiar and welcoming. They easily show the highlight of each book with bright colors and a good amount of detail. However, the amount of detail seems to diminish on each cover, with the last three books being relatively straightforward. It makes sense, however, as Harry grows, he focuses less on the beauty of this magical new world and becomes more serious as he faces increasingly dangerous trials.

2002 Ukrainian edition

Second, we have Ukraine Harry Potter covers illustrated by Vladyslav Yerko. These covers are pretty action packed. There are a lot of images in each cover that constantly catch your eyes from point to point. These interesting covers show a detailed scene or combination of scenes from a key story point in vivid colors.

1999 Swedish edition

Then come the Swedish covers illustrated by Alvaro Tapia. These covers are quite intriguing – the art style seems a bit darker. Except for the cover of the first book, which is naturally bright and full of wonder, these illustrations have a more serious feel about them. Between the facial expressions and the darker color palette, it looks like Harry is becoming aware of the danger in his life.

2008 China Collector’s Edition

These beautiful covers are the result of a team collaboration between 李里, 王翔 and 于国志 after a contest was held for the new collector’s editions of Harry Potter books in China. These covers differ from the action-packed ones we’ve seen so far. Instead of being very active and bold, these images have a rather soothing simplicity. The colors are paler and the illustrations flow together satisfactorily.

Thailand 20th Anniversary Edition

Finally, we leave you with this Arch Apolar masterpiece. The brand new Harry Potter Thailand book covers are beautiful works of art. These seven covers are full of beautiful illustrations that tell a story in themselves. Each cover has front and back images that also feature a key character on the back. Despite all these details, the cover never seems cluttered, which shows us how talented this artist is. One could stare at these covers for hours and still find more subtle details tying the piece together.
