Tapio Hakanen, musical director of YleX:
UMK has been gaining popularity for years with both audiences and artists, and plays an indisputable role in helping new artists achieve their big breakthrough. The later UMKs have been increasingly successful both in Finland and abroad. BESS’s Ram pam pam was one of Finland’s biggest hits this year, and The Rasmus’ Jezebel captivated global audiences in the Eurovision Song Contest. Every song that has competed at UMK22 has achieved great success, both on radio and streaming services. And considering the fact that the final had an audience of 1.97 million Finns, it’s safe to say that UMK22 was a big hit everywhere. We are eagerly awaiting artists and songs from this new season – now is the time to apply!
The winner of UMK23 will represent Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest. Every song on UMK22 has made it to the Top 50 of the Finnish Spotify charts and garnered over 31 million plays to date. BESS Ram pam pam was the most played song of the year on Finnish radio airwaves. On Youtube, UMK22-related content has been viewed over 6.5 million times, and many videos hit top trending lists soon after release. The date and location of the UMK23 final will be announced at the end of 2022.
The Rasmus won their ticket this year, to represent Finland at Eurovision in Turin, with ‘Jezebel’. Take a look at their performances below:
