This YouTuber covered eight classic pop songs in the style of Amon Amarth and the results are suitably epic/ridiculous

Amon Amarth probably wouldn’t be the first band that comes to mind when you think of artists who could give pop music a fun metal makeover. The Swedish stalwarts of melodic death metal have long since perfected their blend of rumbling death metal riffs, epic heavy metal hooks and gung ho, battle-worn lyrics of ancient Viking legends. They also know how to throw one heck of a party, as anyone who’s seen one of their epic gigs recently will attest.

Still, Johan Hegg and his merry men wouldn’t be the first bunch of guys you’d call if you wanted someone to do a riffed cover of, say…Baby one more time by Britney Spears. That didn’t stop YouTube guitarist Denis Pauna from making an entire video dedicated to Amon Amarth’s versions of classic pop anthems, remember, covering everyone from Britney to Madonna to the Backstreet Boys in the style of our favorite Swedish axe-slingers.

Not only did he do a great job mimicking the unmistakable growl of Johan Hegg’s Cookie Monster on steroids and the twin guitar attacks of Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg, he actually made the songs look pretty damn epic.

To imagine I want it this way if it was written by a battalion of bloodthirsty Norse warriors on their way to crack skulls and drink mead and you could be on the way.

Either way, you better listen to the covers for yourself below. Amon Amarth’s latest album The Great Heathen Army was released earlier this year via Metal Blade.
