Even before taking the stage to play in the second semi-final of Eurovision 2022, Sweden’s Cornelia Jakobs is already one of the favorites for victory and also has a past at Eurovision.
To travel to Italy to compete in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, Cornelia had to go through the rounds of the famous Swedish national competition Melodifestivalen and the final, where she faced very tough competition from national treasure Anders Bagge and his song Bigger Than The Universe. Luckily for Cornelia, while the lion’s share of viewers’ votes went to Anders, she topped the international juries and garnered enough public support to clinch victory with her track Hold Me Closer.
Sweden has a proud Eurovision record. No music fan will ever forget ABBA’s victories in the early 1970s, while other famous Swedish winners include Charlotte Nilsson who won the final millennium competition with Take Me To Your Heaven, Loreen who won with the anthem Euphoria 10 years ago and Manz Zamerlow. , who last won in 2015.
Cornelia, 30, is in action in Thursday’s Eurovision Semi-Final 2, performing penultimate towards the end of the show and well-imagined to follow semi-final qualifying as Norway’s Subwoofer, and the favorites of bookmakers to win in the odds of Eurovision, the Kalush Orchestra of Ukraine in the final. But Eurovision 2022 is far from his first rodeo as far as the contest is concerned, having failed to represent Sweden in 2011 and 2012.
Who is Swedish Eurovision contestant Cornelia Jakobs?
Cornelia first entered Melodifestivalen in 2011 as a member of girl group Love Generation, three years after appearing on the Swedish version of Pop Idol. Love Generation finished third in the fourth semi-final of the contest with their song Dance Alone, earning them a spot on the “second chance” show, where they fell apart.
The band gave Eurovision another shot a year later with Just A Little Bit, but they fell at the first hurdle after finishing just sixth in their semi-final. Since Love Generation’s Eurovision heartbreak, Cornelia has forced a solo career in her homeland, composing and performing the song “Weight of the World” which became the soundtrack for the Nordic HBO series Björnstad.
Other Cornelia songs on Spotify include Fine, All The Gold and Late Night Stories.
