Yngwie threatened to cancel the show if the ex-singer didn’t leave

Jeff Scott Soto, a former vocalist in guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen’s band, claimed he was asked to leave a Malmsteen concert this week in Southern California, as reported by the Hard Rock Blog Sleaze Roxx.

The singer said someone told him the show wouldn’t happen if he stayed put. Malmsteen disputed Soto’s story, as was later reported by Blabbermouth.

Malmsteen, of course, is the flashy Swedish guitar shredder who’s now touring the US in support of his latest solo studio album, his 22nd, last year. Parabellum. On Thursday, May 19, the tour stopped at Agoura Hills Canyon, California.

This is the gig where Soto alleged he was shunned.

In a Friday (May 20) post on social mediasaid Soto, “I went to The Canyon club tonight, my local watering hole for 21 years. It’s like my Cheers where everyone knows my name. I actually went to one of the support groups, which was a killer.”

He continues: “I was hesitant to go because my old, uh, ‘boss’ was headlining, but I wasn’t planning on staying anyway. Well, he was told I was in the house, and was kindly told as long as I’m present, the show would be cancelled. Now that I’ve seen it all! I left as planned, but that’s kind of funny. I just had to to share the ridiculousness (not a real word but seems to match the detail) that continues into 2022. I laughed all the way back! I’m sure it will be shared like crazy.”

Malmsteen disputed Soto’s version of events, to respond, “I think some people make up stories to be in the media again. Kids, don’t believe the BS made up by people trying to stay relevant!”

Malmsteen calls Soto “it’s not important to me to cancel my show to my fans. On the other hand, my agent told me he snuck in there without paying, so security l ‘got kicked out. Some people make up stories, show up at my show, get kicked out by security because they snuck in the room without paying, then turn to make up a story to try and get media attention.”

The guitarist adds: “Some people are sick. Stop harass me and get help.”

Soto sang on the first two albums of Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force, in 1984 Rising force and next year Workingtwo archetypal examples of early ’80s neoclassical heavy metal. Soto returned for another stint in the mid-’90s, contributing to the 1996 effort Yngwie Inspiration. The singer has also performed in Kryst the Conqueror, Talisman, Journey and is currently a member of Sons of Apollo.

Contrary to Soto’s article, “ridiculism” is a real word according to the Cambridge English Dictionary. See Malmsteen’s remaining 2022 tour dates under posts and get tickets here.
